A suicide bomber on Thursday detonated his explosive-laden vehicle near a police station in north-western Pakistan, killing five people and injuring 25 more, security and rescue officials said.

The bombing took place in Hangu district, 100 kilometres south-west of Peshawar, the capital of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, dpa reported.

Abdul Rashid, the district police chief, said that the bomber detonated the explosives when the guards opened fire at the vehicle near Doaba police station. "The attacker did not manage to reach the target and that is why the losses are minimum," he said.

The explosion damaged the police station and several nearby buildings.

Mujahid Khan, a rescue official, said that five bodies and 25 injured had been taken to hospital.

Hangu is located adjacent to the country's lawless tribal region where government forces are fighting Taliban and al-Qaeda militants.
