Minister: Belarus ready to provide Azerbaijani citizens with medical services

Belarus is ready to provide the Azerbaijani citizens with high-tech medical services.
"Cooperation between Azerbaijan and Belarus is fruitfully developing in all spheres of medicine, in science and practice. It is pleasant that the Belarusian health system is assessed in Azerbaijan and Belarus is ready to provide the Azerbaijani citizens with high-tech medical services," said Belarusian Health Minister Vasili Jarko told Trend.

He said in 2009-2010 over 3,000 Azerbaijani citizens benefited from the Belarusian doctors. A variety of directions: pediatric and adult oncology, cardiology, traumatology and orthopedics. Jarko said the Azerbaijani citizens underwent a number of complex operations, such as endoprosthesis replacement (replacement of natural joint by artificial) of hip joint, knee arthroscopy.

"In 2011, the Republican Scientific and Practical Center for Organ and Tissues Transplantation performed a liver transplant on three adults from Azerbaijan. Another two patients were included in the waiting list. It should be noted that similar operations are also performed in Azerbaijan," Jarko said.

He said the most needed medical services in pediatric oncology and hematology in the near future may become transplantation of bone marrow, peripheral stem cell, mesenchymal stem cells grown in vitro, umbilical blood cells.

Another priority is for providing high-tech services to Azerbaijani patients such as bone marrow transplantations. These will be performed on adult patients from donor family members. They are successfully performed in the Belarusian Republican Centre for Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplantation, Jarko said. Thus, the cost of related transplantation of bone marrow and stem cells in European countries is around 200,000 euros, while in Belarus it is $110,000-120,000, he added.

In addition, Jarko stressed that the Belarusian Republican Scientific and Practical Center for Traumatology and Orthopaedics can provide paid services for specialist training in clinical studies and an internship in modern traumatology and orthopedics, including endoprosthesis joint replacement, arthroscopy, minimally invasive osteosynthesis, pediatric orthopedics, and spine injuries.
