Morocco foiled on Saturday an attempt to smuggle 4,603 kg of cannabis in the northern town of Dar El Kabdani, and arrested one suspect, Trend reports citing Reuters.

Policemen seized three vehicles, including one registered in Europe with cannabis resin on board, the Moroccan police said in a statement.

During this operation, the security services also arrested five other people who were found filming the operation with a camera in a car, in order to discover their possible links with the criminal network involved in the case, it added.

Despite efforts to crack down on cannabis cultivation during the past decade, Morocco remains one of the world's largest producers of the narcotic plant, according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.

Moroccan security services seized a total of 179,657 kg of cannabis in 2019, the Moroccan police revealed in its annual report.
