( Cihan ) - Greek Cyprus radio announced Monday that the body of the missing U.S. diplomat was found in a remote mountain area.

However, the police said it was early to confirm the identity of the body, found in the Lefka region northwest of the capital Nicosia.

They have been looking for U.S. embassy attache Thomas Mooney for the past four days who had disappeared on June 28.

According to the statement the U.S. embassy to Nicosia made, Mooney could not be reached for the last three days. The embassy hesitated to make any immediate comment on the identity of the body found near the capital.

Police Chief Iacovos Papacostas said a farmer discovered the body about 100 to 200 meters from a car matching that belonging to Mooney and informed the authorities immediately.

"Police are on the scene. We cannot say at this moment 100 percent that we are sure it is him," he said.
