The first European Games torch was delivered to Lerik May 1.
The torch was received at the entrance to the city. Athlete of Lerik Rafig Aliyev accepted the torch. Then the march of ten torchbearers began. Passing the torch to each other, the athletes reached the central square - the square of Heydar Aliyev.
Honored Worker of Physical Culture and Sports Ilham Zulfiyev raised the torch on the stage built on the square.
The torch of the first European Games was lit and will stay in the area until the end of the competition.
A video film about torch lighting of the first European Games in the Temple of fire worshipers Ateshgah April 26 with the participation of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, First Lady, Chairperson of the Organizing Committee of the first European Games Mehriban Aliyeva, President of EOC Patrick Hickey and other guests was shown at the ceremony.
After Lerik, the torch of the first European Games was carried to Astara.
Baku 2015 is the first-ever European Games, an exciting and innovative multi-sport event for the continent that will take place on June 12-28, 2015.
There will be a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports. More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe will be representing their nations over 17 days of competition.
Baku was awarded the games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
