Turkmenistan considers it appropriate to work out a draft agreement on cooperation in the field of transport in the Caspian Sea and establish the Caspian regional transport and logistics center, the Turkmen government said.

This statement was made as part of the 43rd meeting of the ad hoc working group on working out the convention on the legal status of the Caspian Sea.

The meeting is being held at the level of deputy foreign ministers of the Caspian littoral countries, namely, Turkmenistan, Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Iran in Ashgabat January 27-29.

"This initiative is being promoted given the obvious importance of the mutual integration of the transport systems of the coastal countries, ensuring coordination of multimodal transport at regional and global levels," the statement said.

It was reported earlier that Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov offered during his visit to Iran in November 2015 to hold the first international meeting on increasing the potential of sea ports of the Caspian littoral countries.

Turkmenistan borders with Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan and Iran on the Caspian Sea. The regional transport project implementation has been recently intensified.

The modernized large-capacity vessels of the Turkmen merchant fleet are actively involved in freight cargo transportation in the Caspian Sea, serving international routes from the Turkmenbashi port to the Caspian countries' ports. They are used in many countries and extend the specification of transported goods.

It was earlier reported that the Turkish Gap Insaat will build a modern seaport in the city of Turkmenbashi on the Caspian seashore by 2017. The seaport will also include ship repair and shipbuilding yard. The project is worth $2 billion.
