If the European Union supports Turkey's accession to the EU, Turkey will continue this process which is a strategic goal of Turkish foreign policy, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on Monday, Anadolu agency reported.

"However, if the EU does not show any initiative in this matter, Turkey will not insist and everyone will continue as before," Davutoglu said.

According to him, Turkey is not afraid of losing any country as a strategic partner. More and more countries are trying not to disrupt their relationship with Turkey and seeking to expand their partnership with the country, the minister noted.

The basis of relations between Turkey and the EU was laid in 1964 by the signing of an agreement in Ankara. The basis for Turkey's future potential membership in EU is the Copenhagen criteria adopted in 2002

Since 2002, Turkey has undertaken serious political and economic reforms in accordance with Copenhagen criteria. The negotiations on Turkey's membership started in 2005 and continue to the present day.
