U.S. refusal to deploy missile defense system in Europe will not stop Iran's missile program: Israeli expert

Azerbaijan, Baku, September 17 / Trend , U.Sadikhova /

Despite the U.S. refusal to deploy missile defense system (MDS) in Eastern Europe, Iran will continue to develop plans on missile establishment, said Yehuda Ben Meir, director of National Security and Public Opinion Project at the Israeli Institute for National Security Studies.

"To the best Iran is going to full speed forwards making the huge investments in trying to continue to extend and advance its long rage missile program, Ben Meir told Trend by telephone. It is clearly trying to make missiles which Europe could reach."

On Sept. 17, the Czech Prime Minister Jan Fischer told reporters that U.S. President Barack Obama phoned him and informed of Washington's refusal to deploy anti-missile system in the Czech Republic and Poland.

Until recently, the U.S. was going to, by 2013, deploy a radar in the Czech Republic and ten interceptor missiles in Poland under the pretext of protection from missile threats from Iran. However, Russia opposed these plans, mentioning threats to its security.

The goal of the George Bush administration, which decided to deploy missile defense system, was to protect Europe from possible missile attacks of Iran.

U.S. and other Western countries accuse Iran of developing nuclear weapons under the guise of peaceful nuclear energy program.

In addition to the Western countries, the Iranian nuclear program also poses a threat to Israel, considering the challenges of the Iranian leadership to "wipe Israel off the face of the earth."

According to some Western media outlets, the U.S. sees no need for missile defense system in Europe since the threat of missile attacks from Iran declined.

However, the Israeli analyst Ben Meir doubts that Iran will stop developing missile program and the danger of Iranian missiles is of course if Iran will develop the nuclear weapon.

But USA's refusal to deploy missile defense system in Europe is not related to the Israeli security because the missile system that the USA had planed was aimed specifically at defending capital cities in Europe, Ben Meir said.

In addition, Israel is developing its own anti missile system, jointly with the USA and has cooperation with the USA in the missile area, the analyst said.

The Israeli newspaper Jerusalem Post, referring to official sources at the Department of Defense, reported that the U.S. can deploy missile defense in Israel. Negotiations in this regard began last week, the newspaper reported. In addition, Israel and the United States will conduct joint exercises in the defense sector next month.

Ben Meir considers that USA made this decision with hope that this will result much with Russian cooperation and affective steps on the Iranian issue

"The struggle against the nuclear plants of Iran depends a lot of course on the Russian-American cooperation, Ben Meir said. So I hope that this gesture of the USA which of course is a very important gesture towards Russia."

The UN Security Council adopted five resolutions concerning Iran, three of which imposing sanctions against Iran, requiring it to give up uranium enrichment, and two resolutions contain warning. Tehran denies the accusations, saying its nuclear program is aimed covering country's electricity needs.
