The U.S. will press China, South Korea and Japan to further reduce their imports from Iran, Professor of chemical engineering in Southern California University, Muhammad Sahimi told Trend, commenting on the issues that will be discussed at the upcoming Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul, South Korea.

He noted that aside from the oil imports, sanctions on Iran will probably be discussed as well.

The upcoming Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul is planned for two days, March 26-27. Aside from the hosting country, China, USA, Russia and Japan are among 50+ countries that are participating in the summit.

Iran and North Korea are not on the guest list or the agenda for the Seoul summit, but their nuclear standoffs are dominating talks on the sidelines of the conference that is ostensibly focused on preventing nuclear terrorism.

Senior fellow at Nanyang Technological University's S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, James M. Dorsey believes that while talks on Iran will take place, the move towards military solution is unlikely to be discussed.

"Increased pressure on Iran obviously tops the agenda. That includes curtailing oil exports as well as other measures but is unlikely at this point to dwell extensively on the military option," he told Trend.

Iran, the world's third-largest oil exporter, has been locked in a high-stakes standoff with the West over its nuclear program.Tehran says the program is purely peaceful, but Israel and Western nations believe it is moving towards a nuclear bomb that could change the regional balance of power.
