An Iraqi army officer and four security members were killed and six wounded in a series of gunfire attacks by gunmen in and near the capital Baghdad on Tuesday morning, an Interior Ministry source told Xinhua.

Brigadier General Falih Kareem was shot dead by gunmen using silenced weapons while driving his car in Khadraa district in western Baghdad, the source said on condition of anonymity.

In a separate incident, gunmen attacked a police checkpoint with their silenced weapons in al-Rubaie thoroughfare in Baghdad's eastern district of Zaiyounah, killing two policemen and wounding three others, the source said.

In Baghdad's southern district of Amil, a soldier was killed and another wounded when gunmen using weapons fitted with silencers attacked their checkpoint, the source added.

Near Baghdad, a policeman was killed and two wounded when 15 gunmen in their four vehicles attacked the police station of the town of Tarmiyah, some 30 km north of Baghdad, he said.

Violence and sporadic high profile attacks are still common in the Iraqi cities despite the dramatic decrease of violence over the past few years.
