German Chancellor Angela Merkel pledged assistance to Japan Friday following the devastating earthquake and tsunami that hit the country, DPA reported.
"You can be assured that Germany stands by Japan's side during these tragic hours and is ready to assist," Merkel said in a telegram sent to Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan.
The Chancellor said she had been dismayed by the news of the earthquake and sent her sincere condolences to the families of those who had died. She said she hoped for a speedy recovery for the injured.
