Nine kabaddi players were killed and 15 others seriously injured in a road mishap in the eastern Indian state of Odisha late Saturday evening, Xinhua reported.

"The mishap happened when a mini-truck in which they were traveling fell off a bridge near Surapalli in the state's Sundargarh district," a senior police official said Sunday.

While nine players were killed on the spot, those injured have been admitted to a local hospital where the condition of some are said to be serious, he said on condition of anonymity.

The players were all returning after playing a tournament in the neighboring Dhundigaon district when the accident happened.
