Turkish opposition misses historic chance

By Rufiz Hafizoglu - Trend:

The refusal of Devlet Bahceli, the leader of the Turkish opposition Nationalist Movement Party, to establish a coalition government with the ruling Justice and Development Party is nothing but missing a historic opportunity.

Earlier it was reported that the Nationalist Movement Party has adopted the ruling party's plan on the democratic solution to the Kurdish problem in exchange for a number of conditions. One of them is that the country's foreign ministry will be headed by Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, the former head of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). It was reported that a member of parliament from the Nationalist Movement Party will be the speaker of the parliament.

According to the agreement, Murat Basesgioglu, the former Interior Minister of Turkey, current MP from the Nationalist Movement Party, was to head the Interior Ministry, but Durmus Yilmaz, the former head of the Central Bank of Turkey, MP from the Nationalist Movement Party, was to hold the post of Finance Minister of Turkey.

The Nationalist Movement Party's refusal to establish a coalition government puts the further activity of the party into question.

Earlier, some members of the party expressed dissatisfaction with Bahceli's position. It is possible that refusing a coalition government with the Justice and Development Party will lead to a serious split in the party.

Davutoglu has recently urged Bahceli to be more reasonable.

If we consider the political situation in Turkey and the relations between political parties, we can say that there is no alternative to the establishment of a coalition government by these two parties.

Because, the creation of a coalition government of the Peoples' Democratic Party with the ruling party, as well as between the Republican People's Party and the ruling party is out of question.

After the elimination of the candidate from the Nationalist Movement Party Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu in the third round of the voting for the parliament speaker, the party cast vote for the candidate of the Justice and Development Party, Defense Minister Ismet Yilmaz. This led to the sharp criticism of the Nationalist Movement Party leader Devlet Bahceli by the leader of the Republican People's Party Kemal Kilicdaroglu.

The time set by the legislation for forming a coalition government in Turkey expires after 20 days. This time is sufficient for the Nationalist Movement Party to consider its decision on forming a coalition government.

Meanwhile, it is not ruled out that an early election can be held in Turkey, which is risky for the country's political parties, especially, for the Nationalist Movement Party.

In the case of holding an early election, the Nationalist Movement Party can loose the majority of its votes. Additionally, it is not ruled out that in this case, the party won't be able to overcome the 10 percent threshold for obtaining seats in the parliament.
