By Huseyn Valiyev - Trend:

The Azerbaijani government will soon approve an action plan on the development of broadband internet access in the country, the Azerbaijani Communications and Information Technologies Ministry told Trend on Jan. 15.

The ministry said this project will cover the years 2014-2016. The State Oil Fund of Azerbaijan (SOFAZ) plans to allocate 103 million manats for the first stage of the project. The project's total cost is estimated at over 450 million manats.

Until 2017, all settlements in Azerbaijan will be provided with high-speed access to the internet, according to the ministry's plans.

The project's ultimate goals are to provide the entire country, including remote rural areas with high-speed internet access with a speed of 10-100 megabits/second and increase the amount of broadband internet users to 85 percent. This will allow Azerbaijan to reach the level of developed countries by to 2017.

Currently 70 percent of the Azerbaijani population uses the internet and the level of broadband internet penetration among the population is 50 percent.
