Agency: Food safety development requires strong legal base

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Jan. 23

By Eldar Janashvili - Trend:

Nineteen laboratories that have passed international accreditation have been opened in Azerbaijan in order to identify products that do not meet standards, Deputy Chairman of Azerbaijan's Food Safety Agency Rufat Rustamzade said at a business forum on the current state and prospects of food safety, Trend reports.

Food products are checked in these laboratory departments for the presence of risk factors that cause damage to public health, Rustamzade said.

The deputy chairman noted that the main task before the food safety development is to create a strong legal base. For example, a law on the safety of poultry meat was introduced in 2019, he added.

For good mutual cooperation in this area, it is necessary that entrepreneurs adapt their products to these standards, Rustamzade added.

"The country is carrying out economic reforms in all spheres and this area is no exception. It is necessary that the state and entrepreneurs become a single team solving joint problems," the deputy chairman added.

Baku hosts a business forum on the current state and prospects of food safety on Jan. 23. The event is attended by representatives of Azerbaijan's SMB Development Agency, Food Safety Agency, Agriculture Ministry, Women Entrepreneurs Fund, National Confederation of Entrepreneurs (Employers) Organizations, as well as food industry entrepreneurs.
