The search for solutions to the ongoing conflicts in Georgia and the Caucasus is vitally important for the security of the entire Euro-Atlantic space, NATO Secretary General, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, said in Tbilisi on 4 October.

According to Mediamax news agency, while speaking at the Tbilisi National University on 4 October, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said NATO had made repeated statements regarding its backing the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Georgia and its other partner countries in the Caucasus.

"However, the mandate for settlement of conflicts in the region is for the OSCE and the UN, not NATO, and the alliance has no intention to be more involved," the Secretary General said.
