The German government's position in the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict requires the implementation of resolutions of the UN Security Council, the Azerbaijan embassy in Germany told Trend.
Earlier, on the embassy's initiative, an appeal was sent to the German Bundestag in connection with the illegal visit of Jurgen Klimke, MP of the Christian Democratic Union / Christian Social Union (CDU / CSU) fraction to the occupied territories of Azerbaijan. An official response was received in response to the appeal.
On September 12, MP of the German Bundestag's Christian Democratic Union / Christian Social Union faction Jurgen Klimke visited Armenia and then without Azerbaijan's consent visited Azerbaijan's occupied territories and held several meetings with representatives of the separatist regime. This illegal visit of the German Bundestag MP to the occupied territories of Azerbaijan is a provocation aimed against Azerbaijan's territorial integrity and sovereignty.
In response, the Azerbaijani embassy in Germany sent a protest letter to the MP and demanded he gave an explanation in connection with this visit. In addition, the embassy also appealed to the Christian Democratic Union / Christian Social Union (CDU / CSU) fraction of German Bundestag asking it to express its position on this issue.
The position of the German government on Armenian-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is known. The German government recognises neither the so called regime in Azerbaijani territory, nor its representatives.
The German embassy in Baku has already made a statement on the illegal visit of Jurgen Klimke to the occupied territories of Azerbaijan.
Meanwhile, Bundestag MP, Foreign Policy Spokesman of Christian Democratic Union / Christian Social Union (CDU / CSU) faction Philipp Missfelder sent a letter responding to the Azerbaijani Ambassador to Germany Parviz Shahbazov expressing the position of the CDU / CSU faction on the illegal visit of their MP Jurgen Klimke to the occupied territories of Azerbaijan.
The spokesman said Jurgen Klimke's visit to the occupied territories of Azerbaijan caused surprise and disappointment. It is a wrong step and gives out a wrong signal.
Missfelder noted in his letter that it would be right if Jurgen Klimke criticised and condemned the occupation of Azerbaijani territories by Armenia recognising Azerbaijan's territorial integrity as it is called for by international law. The response letter also said that this visit was individual in character and has nothing to do with the CDU / CSU faction and is not supported by it.
In addition Missfelder said the CDU / CSU fraction of the German Bundestag supports numerous press reports and the official position of the German government on the Armenian-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. This position demands the implementation of resolutions of the UN Security Council which unfortunately haven't been implemented so far.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
