( dpa )- A Malaysian man was shot in the crotch after his brother-in-law mistook him for a wild boar, reports said Thursday.

Jimmy Lansaluang , 38, was shot Tuesday afternoon by his 32-year-old brother-in-law who was allegedly hunting with a homemade shotgun in the eastern Sabah state.

Lansalung , who suffered injuries to his crotch area and inner thighs, was immediately rushed to a district hospital by his brother-in-law and reported to be in stable condition, the Star daily said.

District police chief Mohamad Isa Yusof said the suspect, who surrendered to police, was hunting when he claimed that he mistook Lansaluang for a wild boar foraging in the forest area.

"The suspect only realized it was his brother-in-law when he heard human shrieks," Isa said.

The victim was believed to have gone to the forest to harvest rattan.
