The death toll from the earthquake in Iran has reached 300 people, about 2,500 were injured, ISNA news agency quoted the Head of Iranian Red Crescent Society Mahmud Muzaffar.

The death toll from the earthquake in Iran has reached 300 people, about 2,500 were injured, ISNA news agency quoted the Head of Iranian Red Crescent Society Mahmud Muzaffar.

According to him, more than 16,000 people housed in tents. Muzaffar said that on the ground are 92 teams of rescuers total of 9,000 people who came from 14 provinces of the country, as well as six helicopters.

"There are problems with telephone service at the place of disaster. It is therefore very difficult to compile accurate statistics on victims and dead" - said Muzaffar.

Additional amounts of medical supplies and equipment were sent to hospitals of Ardabil, East Azerbaijan and West Azerbaijan.

According to provincial officials, 113 villages suffered damage of varying severity.

Earlier Deputy Interior Minister of Iran Hasan Gandami said about 153 people killed and 700 were wounded. 45 people killed in Ahar, 40 people kille in Varzagan and 18 people killed in Tabriz.

About 60 villages were suffered on road from Varzagan to Tabriz.

Cities that suffered most of all are Varzagan, Nehabad, Salmasan, Ahar and Niyamdobad. More than half of the victims were pulled out under the rubbles during the rescue operation. Three helicopters and special search dogs also were involved to the recue operation

Deputy Head of Iran's National Disaster Management Organization Morteza Akbarpour urged all residents of Tabriz and Ahad to sleep in the parks today for their own safety.

Rescue troops were sent to help to Tabriz and other affected regions, said the head of the Rescue and Relief Organization of Iran's Red Crescent Society (IRCS), Mahmoud Mozaffar.
