Azerbaijani Interior Ministry disseminates official information on mass conflict in Ismayilli region (UPDATE)

The Azerbaijani Interior Ministry has disseminated official information regarding the mass conflict that took place the night before in the Ismayilli region.

The Azerbaijani Interior Ministry has disseminated official information regarding the mass conflict that took place the night before in the Ismayilli region.

According to the Ministry, four people, including three policemen were injured as a result of the conflict.

The conflict took place in the Ismayilli region at 21:30, yesterday, on Jan.23, 2013, resulting in the Chirag Hotel being set on fire and four cars set alight.

The reason behind the violence was down to hotel worker and Baku resident Emil Shamsaddinov's drunken driving along Nizami Street and being involved in an accident by crashing into a lamppost along with his passenger, Baku resident Elmeddin Mammadov and beating the owner of a VAZ-2107, resident Ramil Bekirov.

A large crowd gathered at the scene which is always busy and started to protest at the driver. After E.Shamsaddinov further insulted local residents the conflict took a turn for the worse and as a result the hotel was set on fire and three cars of different makes parked in his yard, were burned to the ground

The accused then attempted to set fire to the house of the son of the region's executive power head Nizami Alekperov's, Elkhan's with the intention to destroy.

Despite police intervention, a car in the yard was then set on fire.

During the incident, four people, including three police officers were injured. The accused Emil Shamsaddinov and Elmeddin Mammadov were detained.

A group of leaders and other senior officials of the Interior Ministry and the Prosecutor General's Office arrived at the scene.

A criminal case has been filed under the relevant articles of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan in the Investigation Department on the Serious Crimes of the Prosecutor General's Office. An investigation is underway.
