IAEA Permit Construction of First Nuclear Reactor in   Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. E.Huseynli / International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) gave permission for the construction of the first nuclear research reactor in Azerbaijan, Adil Gadirov, Director of the Azerbaijan Radiation Problem Institute of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Science and representative of the IAEA on Azerbaijan, said to the Trend Agency on 24 September.

The Azerbaijani delegation visits the IAEA's office in Vienna to familiarize themselves with the construction stage of the reactor from 17 to 19 December. The issue concerning the construction of the reactor in Azerbaijan was discussed during IAEA's session in Vienna from 17 to 21 September. Implementation of the project will commence in 2009. The Radiation Problem Institution has submitted a set of proposals to the Azerbaijan Government on construction of the atomic power plant.

Azerbaijan has not announced its position due to the issue. The construction of the atomic power plant commenced in the Navakhi village during the former Soviet Union. However, the construction was suspended after the Chernobyl incident.

The capacity of the reactor will be 1 microwatt and the venue to construct the plant has not been defined as yet. The fee will be estimated from $ 1mln to 10mln.
