Benilux Countries Interested in  GUAM

Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr S. Aghayeva / Benilux countries are interested in cooperation with the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development - GUAM. GUAM Secretary General Valeriy Chechelashvili, Belgian Ambassador to Ukraine Mark Vink, the Director of the Belgian Ministry's Department on Central and East Europe Vily de Book, as well as the Director of EU Foreign Relations, Belgian Foreign Minister Philip David discussed in Kiev the prospects for cooperation, GUAM Secretariat reported on 25 October.

The format of upcoming cooperation has not been defined yet. Probably it will be specified at the next meeting between GUAM and EU.

As an alternative to CIS the four post-Soviet republics Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova, established the GUAM format in 1997 during the summit of the presidents of the European Union countries in Strasbourg. In 1999, Uzbekistan joined the organization and left it in 4 years. In 2006, at the first summit of the organization in Kiev it was decided to announce GUAM an international organization with a new name of the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development - GUAM.

Within the framework of the organization there are such formats as GUAM-US, GUAM-Japan, GUAM-Poland, and GUAM-EU.
