Opposition Cannot Impede Election Committees’ Work – Azerbaijan Central Election Committee

Azerbaijan, Baku, 12 June / Trend corr E. Babayev/ The Azerbaijan Central Election Committee (CEC) stated that the opposition Musavat party would not be able to impede formation of election committees. "Formation of election committees is a process beyond the power of any party," CEC Chairman Mazahir Panahov said to journalists on 12 June.

Musavat party, representing minority in the Parliament, refused from sending its representative to CEC, until the composition of election committees is formed on the parity basis.

Pahanov said formation of election committees is an independent process. One third part of the Committee's members represents majority at the Parliament, one third part minority and one third part are neutral. According to him, currently two places are vacant in the CEC to be filled by the decision of the Parliament.

"Lack of two members in the Committee will not create serious problems in its activities. But the Secretary position is vacant because the representatives have not yet been sent. As a Secretary lacks, when publishing CEC decisions we are supposed to include the names of all members in the document," Panahov said.
