Activists of Azerbaijani Oppositional Party Released

Azerbaijan, Baku, 11 July / Trend , corr E. Babayev/ At total of 13 people who were detained during the illegal demonstration of the oppositional Musavat Party in front of Baku City Administration on 11 July, have been released, Arif Hajili, head of the Central Administration of Musavat party said to Trend .

The oppositional Musavat Party of Azerbaijan attempted to stage an unauthorized demonstration in front of Baku City Administration on 11 July. Though some 15 to 20 activist of the Party tried to march ahead to the building of Baku City Administration, the police blocked their way. The Musavat part activists demanded to insure the right of the citizens to the freedom of assembly.

According to Hajili, he and other party members were detained in the police station for 3 hours. "We were set free after we were warned and protocol was drawn up," he said. Hajili said that they did not face any pressures.

The oppositional party Musavat was founded in 1992. Isa Gambar, the present Chairman of the Party was the Ex-Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament (Milli Majlis) in 1992 to1993 and was nominated for the 2003 presidential elections. The Party is represented by five MPs in the parliament.
