Azerbaijani Congress in Georgia to Appeal to Muslim Countries

Azerbaijan, Baku, 13 August / corr. Тrend News J.Babayeva / The Azerbaijani Congress in Georgia (ACG) will appeal to Muslim countries with a request to render aid to the Azerbaijanis residing in Georgia, who were injured during military actions in South Ossetia, Ali Babayev, the chairman of the ACG, said to Trend by telephone from Tbilisi on 12 August.

Large-scale military operations commenced in the unrecognized South Ossetia republic in the early morning of 8 August. Georgian Army was reported to enter Tskhinvali. Earlier Russian troops occupied Tskhinvali and forced Georgian Amry back to the Georgian territory.

The Russian troops seized Zugdidi and Poti cities on 12 August, the Georgian Foreign Minister said.

According to Russian media, there are dead and wounded amongst Russian peacekeepers. The Georgian side informs about 20 died servicemen. "There are thousands of died and wounded civil people in South Ossetia," Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.

The Russian Air Forces intensively bombed Marneuli and Bolnisi, densely populated by the Azerbaijanis. More than four people died during shooting of airfield in Marneuli.

On 11 August, the Georgian President signed a peace settlement plan of the Georgian-Russian conflict. On 12 August, the Russian President Dmitriy Medvedev said that he made a decision to end operations under constraint of Georgia to peace.

According to Babayev, villages and settlements of regions populated by the Azerbaijanis, where military operations are held, are empty. "The ACG's officials visited places, which were destroyed. Most of the Azerbaijanis, living in Georgia, left their houses and the places of their arrival are not still known," Babayev said.

He said that the residents of Gori city's suburbs temporarily populated in Borchali, where Azerbaijanis densely live.

The Azerbaijani Congress in Georgia was established in March 2008. About 20 Azerbaijani non-governmental organizations, which function in Georgia, are co-founders of the Congress. The Congress targets to assist in Azerbaijanis' integration to the Georgian society and study solution ways of their problems.
