Coalition May Become Possible Should Azerbaijani Opposition Leaders Set Priorities: Party Chairman

Azerbaijan, Baku, 30 August / Trend corr. J.Babayeva/ According to the chairman of the opposition Azerbaijan Democratic Party (ADP) Sardar Jalaloglu, the persons suggesting an opposition alliance try to represent the opposition as an acting force.

"Establishment of the alliance is not being discussed with other opposition parties at the moment," Jalaloglu said told Trend on 29 August.

Presidential elections in Azerbaijan will take place on 18 October. Most of the opposition parties will boycott the elections. The Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), a member of the Azadlig bloc, has launched negotiations to create a new cooperation centre. Several parties agreed to enter the new alliance.

According to Jalaloglu, although the negotiations are underway to establish an alliance, the views of the discussers do not coincide. "The discussers differently name the alliance. In fact, establishment of an opposition alliance is not the problem in question, and nobody knows when it will launch operation. The alliance established in this form will have neither political force nor authority. Some people think their ideas are incontestable. They say to those who criticize the ideas that their criticism is caused by their non-participation in the alliance," Jalaloglu said.

According to Jalaloglu, the Azerbaijani people do not need an opposition alliance but its goal. "Until the goal and the correct ways leading to it are determined, the alliance will be for nothing. The opposition used to establish different unions. Those short-term groups did not play a crucial role in the political life of the country," he said.

Jalaloglu said it is important for the Azerbaijani opposition to establish an alliance to coordinate the activities of opposition parties. "The centre must not be established on the basis of a subjective idea. Opposition leaders must analyze the events taking place in the country and worldwide, must determine the most optimal ways to settle the priority issues and problems of Azerbaijan, must precise the ways leading to political development. The centre must consider the suggestions regarding qualitative changes in the opposition. The alliance may be possible only if the issues are coordinated," he said.
