US Allocates $4.5mln for Counter Narcotics

Azerbaijan, Baku, 23 September /corr Trend D.Khatinoglu / The United States of America is allocating US $4.5 million for 9 provinces (Kabul, Kunar, Baghlan, Daikundi, Jawzjan, Kapisa, Laghman, Samangan and Sarepul) under the Good performance initiative (GPI), Zulmay Afzali, the spokesman for the Afghanistan's Ministry of Counter Narcotics, told Trend .   

The allocated budget will be spent for the development projects in these provinces. The allocated budget for each province has been divided in two categories as follows:

Category 1: Poppy-free provinces:

After the announcement of the Annual Drug Survey Report for the year 2008, and according to the commitments of the Ministry of Counter Narcotics to the provinces of the country, this Ministry is seeking international assistance for 18 provinces of the country that were already poppy free. In addition, the next effort by MCN will be obtaining additional funds for the 11 provinces that have reduced poppy cultivation.

A total of US $ 38.7 million allocated by the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and assistance of the friend countries for 29 provinces of the country, amongst which US$ 14.5 Million have already been funded to the Ministry and the rest will receive from the governments of the United States and Britain.
