Azerbaijan, Baku, 4 November / Trend corr. J.Babayeva / The opposition National and Democratic Party of Azerbaijan (NDPA) intends to join upcoming municipal and parliamentary elections in the composition of the bloc.

"If our position coincides with forces, with which we will cooperate within the framework of the Union for democracy, on the eve of upcoming elections and we have common views, then we can make a decision to participate in the elections within the bloc," Tufan Karimli, the chairman of the NDPA, which is included in the Union for democracy, told Trend .

The Union includes the Classical Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (CPFPA), Azadlig and the NDPA. The Alliance is an advisory and cooperation organization.

The issue on the Union's participation in the municipal elections as a bloc should be examined, Mirmahmud Miralioglu, the chairman of the CPFPA, said.

Concrete discussions have not yet held to change format of the Union, Karimli said.

The NDPA party was established in 1993 as the Boz Gurd (Grey Wolf) organization. In 1994, it was registered at the Justice Ministry. In 1995, the Supreme Court annulled the registration due to the name of the party. In order to solve the problem, the party was renamed into the National and Democratic Party of Azerbaijan at its second meeting, held in 1999.

The chairman of party Isgandar Hamidov, the former interior minister, has been in prison from 1995 to 2004. Hamidov was sentenced to 15-year imprisonment and released in 2004 by the pardon decree of the President.

In April 2008, Hamidov resigned from the position of party chairman. He explained his resignation with desire - to give arena to youth and young people to rule over the party worthily. Karimli, head of the Supreme Majlis, was elected chairman of the NDPA in the 4th extraordinary congress of the party.
