Azerbaijan’s Opposition Party Gives Go-Ahead to Preparation for Municipal Election

Azerbaijan, Baku, November 27/ Trend , corr A. Huseynbala/ Opposition Umid (Hope) Party of Azerbaijan has given a go-head to preparations for the municipal election.

"Chief of the party Igbal Agazade met with the head of local offices of the party in Gabala, Oguz, Kurdamir, Samukh, Agdash regions and Ganja city and gave orders concerning municipal election," deputy chief of Umid Party Anvar Agayev said to Trend .

Azerbaijan will hold municipal election in 2009 and parliamentary election in 2010. The previous municipal elections have been held in 1999 and 2004.

He said they believe they will achieve success in municipal election. "We have draft program for all municipalities. We have defined the area, member and number of voters of every municipality," Agayev added.

He said Umid Party will nominate its candidates in accordance with the number of members of municipalities. "Our aim is to ensure victory of all our members in municipal councils. We will take part in the election not as a bloc, but separately," Agayev said.

The oppositional Umid Party has been founded in 1993. The Civil Solidarity Party (CSP) joined it in 2002. The former chairman of CSP Igbal Agazade was elected chairman of Umid Party. Agazade is also MP of the Azerbaijani parliament.
