The Kazakh government proposed that parliament consider making Nauriz Meyrami a three-day celebration from March 21-23, member of parliament Jiger Baytelesov told Trend on Feb. 10.
"The proposal was included in draft amendments to the Law on Holidays. The president mentioned such a celebration in his speech on May 29," Baytelesov said.
Nourouz is a traditional Turkic holiday symbolizing life that is akin to New Year's in other countries.
Nourouz is also referred to as the "Great Day of the Nation" in Kazakhstan.
The day coincides with March 22 in the Gregorian calendar.
Nourouz lasts from March 22 to April 21.
