EU policy against Israel should be more determined: European Parliament Vice President

Belgium, Brussels, Feb. 21 / Trend , A. Ismayilova /

European Union must halt the expansion of cooperation with Israel, which does not respect human rights and international law, and to save Israel by means of pressure from the future government of right-wing, Vice-President of the European Parliament Luisa Morgantini said.

"If we support "Two people for Two states", it means that Europe, but also the International Community, should act to stop the policy of settlements, the closures, the embargo, the military incursions," Morgantini said in an exclusive interview with Trend .

With the last military aggression the Israelis have committed war crimes. That's why there is a need of a transparent investigation made by the UN.

"What I have seen up till now on the ground, in Gaza Strip there have been great breaches of Geneva Conventions, destruction of schools, hospitals, industrial areas, and civilians population have been the target of the aggression," Morgantini said.

In Gaza there is not only a humanitarian disaster: there is first of all, the unsolved issue of the lack of freedom and independence for the entire Palestinian population, both in West Bank and Gaza; there is the matter of the Israeli violations of all the UN resolutions done after they occupied the land in 1967.

During the Six Day War in 1967 Israel occupied the West Bank and Jerusalem.

Israeli military operations in Gaza against Hamas, which lasted 22 days, killed more than 1,300 Palestinians and about 5,000 injured. The consequences of military operations have become a humanitarian catastrophe in the region and the destruction of infrastructure.

The humanitarian disaster in Gaza has been produced by the Israeli and International policies which imposed embargo and closures -also for people- for all border crossings. Since many people died because of the blockade and for not having the permit to cross Eretz checkpoint to go to the hospitals.

Israel sees the main reason for closing borders as protection from the attacks of armed Palestinian factions such as Hamas, Islamic Jihad and others.

Rafah was repeatedly subjected to air attacks by Israeli army to destroy the tunnel through which weapons to Hamas is delivered. European parliamentarians will visit the region to see the situation

The Europeans must see by themselves what it means to be under occupation and also to show that Palestinians are not only extremist militants throwing rockets on the Israeli civil population. On the contrary, there are more than three millions of them who are resisting in a peacefully and non-violent way to the occupation, just to survive or to be able to go to work or to send children to school.

Earlier, the European Parliament refused to expand relations with Israel and adopted several resolutions for lifting blockade from Gaza.

"Of course, the EU is opposed to attacks on the civilian population of Israel and there is a need to continue to work over the unity of the Palestinian government and territories," Vice President said.

The reason for hostilities in Gaza has been the ongoing Hamas rocket attacks on southern Israel, after the end of a six-month agreement. Four Israeli civilians died as a result of shelling Kassam rockets.
