Uzbekistan appointed new Ambassador Sherzot Fayziev to Turkmenistan and the new ambassador handed his credentials to President Gurbangulu Berdimuhammedov, Turkmen TV reported on May 6.

Authorized representative conveyed greetings by Uzbek Leader Islam Karimov, sending wishes for peace and happiness for the whole Turkmen people. "We value the trust and understanding, which rightfully proud of Turkmen and Uzbek peoples, and which constitute the foundation of contemporary international relations," Berdimuhammedov said.

He said bilateral cooperation, "acquired a new quality and enriched with new contents" at this stage. The parties noted that the consolidation of ties in many ways serves the "closeness or coincidence of views on issues of international and regional policy."

The diplomat, in turn, noted that Uzbekistan appreciates and supports the international initiatives of Ashgabat, which were made for the benefit of Central Asia, and globally. The meeting dealt with issues of expansion of relations in trade and economy, science, education, health, sports and tourism.

The two countries are linked by transnational projects: in particular, at present a gas pipeline is being constructed to supply Turkmen gas via transit through Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan to China. In addition, Uzbekistan has traditionally provided for the transit of Turkmen energy resources, to Russia - natural gas and to Tajikistan - electricity.
