Commander of U.S Naval Forces visits Tbilisi

Commander of U.S Naval Forces, General James T. Conway is on a working visit in Tbilisi. Conway has already met with Georgian Defense Minister, Vasil Sikharulidze.  

The meeting was held behind the closed doors. Chief of the Joint Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces Devi Chankotadze also took part in the meeting.

A total of 75 American Marines, who arrived in the country to train the Georgian military contingent, are subordinated to General Conway. One of the Georgian battalions will be sent to Afghanistan to participate in peacekeeping operations of the NATO countries.

Their training will begin on Sep.1. The battalion will serve in Afghanistan in the zone of U.S. responsibility.

Another Georgian company will leave for Afghanistan to the zone of France's responsibility. The official Paris will train the Georgian military in France.

Today [Aug.21], Secretary of the Georgian Security Council, Ekaterina Tkeshelashvili, and Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze will receive the commander of  U.S. Naval Forces.
