An earthquake struck mountainous northwestern Georgia at 02.45 on Tuesday but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

An earthquake struck mountainous northwestern Georgia at 02.45 on Tuesday but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, the Racha-Lechkhumi Regional Administration, where the epicenter of the earthquake was, reported.

The Georgian Seismological Service reported that the epicentre of the earthquake was 70 km (43 miles) north of Kutaisi, in the Oni city (the Racha-Lechkhumi region) and the quake was 8 in magnitude. The quakes were 5 in magnitude in other regions of Georgian and Tbilisi.

People across Georgia were reported to have been woken up by the tremors, with many of them rushing out of their homes into the streets. However, strong quakes were not recorded anymore.

The earthquake was felt in South Ossetia, and the light turned off in Tskhinvali. People spent the night on the street there, as well.
