Election of Senator Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz to the post of Secretary General will primarily strengthen the European Council. The chairman of the Polish Senate Bogdan Boruzevich told journalists Monday residing in Strasbourg in the autumn session of PACE, answering the question "How will it affect the election of Senator Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz for the post of Secretary General on the improvement of relations between Russia and the EU and the issues awaiting solutions".

"I support the candidacy of Mr. Cimoszewicz and this is why I am here. He is an independent politician and he does not avoid making important decisions. It is essential that it has a long-term outlook on the future of the EU. In addition, Mr. Cimoszewicz knows the post-Soviet state and the region as a whole. Together with a good knowledge of the countries, he is well aware of the processes occurring in them. In the elections in Poland, he received a majority of the Belarusian Orthodox ethnic strata. I believe that it may play a role in his election. He knows the Russian language, is familiar with the traditions and the region, "- added the chairman of the Senate.

"After meetings with leaders of political groups in the PACE, I am even more optimistic about the election of Cimoszewicz, than when he arrived here. Meeting with European People's Party was not easy, but it was a fruitful exchange of views, "- he said.
