Expert: Kyrgyz opposition has chances for success
Azerbaijan, Baku, March 18 / Trend V. Zhavoronkova /
The opposition in Kyrgyzstan now has a real chance to achieve success, Russian expert on Central Asia Alexander Knyazev said.
"The opposition, with all its disadvantages, has almost a historic chance now if they think a little bit about the fate of the people, " Knyazev told Trend via e-mail.
On Wednesday, the united opposition held a kurultai. The agenda included talks about increased tariffs on electricity and president constitutional reforms.
Leader of the Social Democratic Party Almaz Atambayev, head of the PDAP parliamentary faction Rosa Otunbayeva, leader of Ak Shumkar Temir Sariev, head of Uluu Birimdik Emil Kaptagaev, and other opposition politicians and NGO representatives were among the kurultay participants.
Data on the number of participants varies. The opposition says over 5,000 individuals took part, while the Interior Ministry said no more than 1,500 people gathered.
Opposition protests were held in Kyrgyzstan in the past. But now, the opposition has a real chance for success, he said.
According to Knyazev, earlier opposition actions were fake. People participated in opposition activities for money. But now the opposition can find common ground with the people.
"But the opposition must transform from a thing for itself into a thing in itself in terms of the Hegelian dialectic of language. It must find those claims that are supported by society very quickly. Time is short," he said.
He added that Otunbayeva and Atambayev are strong potential leaders.
"If the opposition leaders are able to overcome all their shortcomings now, in the short term, we may be the witnesses of dramatic changes in this republic," Knyazev said.
Today, for the first time, the opposition is not influenced by external factors. It is not engaged by anyone, which increases its chances for success, he said.
