U.S. top official to visit Uzbekistan

Deputy Secretary James B. Steinberg will travel to Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, and Japan July 16-22. This is Deputy Secretary Steinberg’s first visit to Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Mongolia as Deputy Secretary, the U.S. State Department reported.

Deputy Secretary James B. Steinberg will travel to Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, and Japan July 16-22. This is Deputy Secretary Steinberg's first visit to Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Mongolia as Deputy Secretary, the U.S. State Department reported.

Deputy Secretary Steinberg will attend the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Informal Ministerial and meet with Foreign Minister Kanat Saudabayev and civil society leaders in Almaty, Kazakhstan July 16-17.

In Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Deputy Secretary Steinberg will meet with President Islom Karimov, Foreign Minister Vladimir Norov and civil society leaders July 17-18.

Steinberg will be the fourth representative of the U.S. State Department, who visited Uzbekistan in the past two months U.S. Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asia Robert Blake, .S. Assistant Secretary for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Michael Posner and Population, Refugees and Migration, Eric Schwartz have visited the country in June 2010.
