Officers from the Turkmen State Customs Committee began a five-day training session at the Hazardous Materials Management and Emergency Response Training Center in the United States this week.

According to the U.S. Embassy in Ashgabat, the training session is sponsored by the U.S. State Department under the Export Control and Related Border Security Program. The program promotes the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, control over strategic commodities and border security.

The program's main goal is to teach the officers how to better detect, identify, ban and investigate the smuggling of weapons of mass destruction and nuclear, chemical and biological materials. Issues such as the threat of weapons of mass destruction, missile systems, and radioactive materials and their transportation were also discussed.
