Azerbaijani FM asks citizens to refrain from trips to Egypt

The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry warned the country's citizens about the situation in Egypt and asked to refrain from trips to this country, the Ministry reported.
At present, mass demonstrations and unrest, which pose a great danger for foreigners in Egypt, is underway in this country.

Azerbaijani citizens facing problems in this country are recommended to contact the Republic's embassy in Egypt to get quick assistance.

An employee of the Azerbaijani embassy in Egypt was killed in Cairo on Saturday as a result of mass public disorders in this country.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev instructed the relevant agencies of the country to evacuate immediately Azerbaijani citizens temporarily residing and studying in Egypt in connection with the last disorders, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry Spokesman Elkhan Polukhov said earlier.

An airliner of the Azerbaijani state airlines flew from Baku to Cairo to evacuate Azerbaijani citizens from Cairo at 13:55 (local time) on Sunday.

As many as 70 Azerbaijani citizens were residing and studying in Egypt.

Popular protests continued in all major cities of Egypt despite the statement voiced by President Hosni Mubarak. The Egyptian leader said that he supports the free will of the people and the right to demonstrate. However, he noted that in some cases the demonstrators passed the legal boundaries.

The manifestations with the requirements of conducting economic and political reforms and the resignation of 82-year old President Hosni Mubarak, ruling the country for 30 years, were launched in Egypt on January 25. On Friday, the mass protests continued in Cairo and other Egyptian cities. Roughly 150 people died, more than 2000 injured.
