Kyrgyz Parliament should become an effective model for the whole Central Asian region, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Head Petros Efthymiou said upon concluding a two-day visit to Bishkek, the organization press-release reported.

Efthymiou headed OSCE PA delegation that visited Kyrgyzstan on Wednesday and Thursday. The aim of the visit was to strengthen cooperation with recently elected Parliament.

"We support the efforts in the Kyrgyz Republic to establish a stable multi-party parliamentary system," Efthymiou said. "All of our governments should be subject to effective oversight by parliament. Such oversight helps ensure efficiency and accountability, it helps combat corruption, and most importantly, it helps earn the trust of population".

New Kyrgyz Parliament of 120 MPs was elected in October 2010. Presidential elections are due to pass in November 2011.

The political situation in Kyrgyzstan remains unstable following the overthrow of Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev in April 2010. Bloody clashes occurred between Kyrgyz and Uzbek communities in the south of Kyrgyzstan.

The OSCE PA delegation met with the Kyrgyz President, Foreign Minister, Speaker and Members of Parliament, Head of the Kyrgyz Delegation to the OSCE PA, government officials and civil society. Ways the OSCE PA can help strengthen the parliament were discussed.
