Azerbaijan to improve legislation to preserve language
Azerbaijan, Baku, April 30/ Trend, M. Aliyev /
The Law "On Language" which is under development at the moment will reflect preservation of the Azerbaijani language, Azerbaijani Parliamentary Culture Committee Chairman Nizami Jafarov told Trend on Friday.
"The law "Law "On Language" which is being developed at the moment will be amended to stipulate preservation of the language from the political point of view," Jafarov said
He said that if special proposals are made, the parliamentary committee will consider the language preservation in the Law on "Azerbaijani language".
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev recently stressed at the annual general meeting of the Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences the importance of protecting mother language from external influence.
At present, the Azerbaijani language is influenced by other languages, Jafarov said.
"But there are some influences on the language that may destroy it. In the Soviet time, in addition to the positive influence on the Azerbaijani language, there was also oppression.
Although Russian language's influence is not as strong as before, our language is now influenced by English," Jafarov added.
He said that influence is mainly noticeable on everyday language rather than intellectual and cultural one.
"It is especially noticeable on television. These influences show themselves both at lexical and grammatical levels, and they must be eliminated," he said.
Jafarov said that secondary schools play a great role in preventing destructive influence. In addition to it, activity of publicists especially in electron media should also be professional," he said.
"Linguists should also try to find out protection factors for mother language at a certain level," he said.
