Two retired generals were arrested in Turkey, after giving testimonies within the investigation of the coup case of Feb.28, 1997, the Sabah newspaper reported on Thursday.

Two retired generals were arrested in Turkey, after giving testimonies within the investigation of the coup case of Feb.28, 1997, the Sabah newspaper reported on Thursday.

Former Land Forces Commander Gen. Erdal Ceylanoglu and Major General Yucel Ozsir were arrested.

A number of retired military, as well as journalists have been already detained and arrested over military coup case. So far, more than 40 people have been arrested, including former representatives of the General Staff and other military officials.

The events of Feb.28, 1997 in Turkey was called a 'post-modernist coup' because the military did not use weapons to overthrow the government, as happened in 1980. However, with their actions, the army applied pressure on the ruling party and other political forces resulting in the then Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan offering his resignation.
