US Senator John McCain travelled to Syria Monday for talks with rebel leaders, CNN reported, citing his spokesman, dpa reported.
McCain met with General Salim Idris, leader of the Supreme Military Council of the Free Syrian Army, and other rebel leaders, according to the website Daily Beast, which first reported the news.
The senator had been in southern Turkey visiting a US Patriot missile site, according to his Twitter account.
The high-ranking Republican has pushed for a more active US role in ending the conflict and would be the top US elected official to have travelled to Syria.
