Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Ekmaleddin Ihsanoglu welcomes the initiative for the hand over of Syrian chemical weapons to international authorities, the press-service of the OIC said on Wednesday.

The hand over of chemical weapons to international control is a positive step on the way to the peaceful solution of the Syrian conflict. It is necessary that the regimes of all Middle Eastern countries refrain from having anything to do with chemical weapons, the press-release said.

Earlier, Russia proposed that chemical weapons in Syria be turned over to the international community and Syrian authorities agreed to this.

Some Western countries, as well as Turkey, have already supported military intervention following another escalation of the situation there. On August 21, Media outlets reported on a large-scale deployment of chemical weapons near Damascus by Syrian Government Troops. Over 600 people were killed in the attack.

Earlier, the US president declared that the use of chemical weapon is a "red line" for the Assad regime. Media outlets reported on the preparation of the Navy and Air Force of these countries to begin intervention.

Clashes between government forces and the armed opposition have been continuing in Syria for over two years. According to UN statistics, the total number of victims of the conflict in Syria is more than 100,000 people. Syrian authorities say that they are opposed by well-armed militants.
