BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 22. On December 22, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov had a telephone conversation with High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, Trend reports citing the MFA press service.
During the conversation, the current situation in the region, the events that caused protests by representatives of civil society in Azerbaijan, the EU mission in Armenia, as well as topical issues on the agenda of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the EU were discussed.
Minister Bayramov said that the reason for the legitimate protests of the Azerbaijanis, who are peacefully rallying on the Lachin road, is the illicit exploitation of mineral deposits in Azerbaijan, environmental problems and the illegal use of the Lachin road, which is intended only for humanitarian purposes. In this regard, the importance of terminating illegal activities that are contrary to the national legislation of Azerbaijan was emphasized.
Bayramov also noted that the allegations that the Lachin road was allegedly closed by Azerbaijan are completely unfounded, a number of vehicles regularly pass on the road during the day, and there are no obstacles related to the transportation of goods for use by local residents or the provision of necessary medical services.
Josep Borrell stated that the current tensions in the region are cause for concern. In this regard, the importance of adherence to the existing peace agenda between the two countries was emphasized.
During the conversation, the sides exchanged views on other issues of mutual interest.
