BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 21. Chairman of the Milli Majlis (Parliament) of Azerbaijan Sahiba Gafarova sent a letter to the Chairman of the Committee on Information Policy, Information Technologies and Communications of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Vyacheslav Volodin regarding the biased statements of Oleg Matveychev, Deputy Chairman of the Committee of the State Duma of the Russian Federation on Information Policy, Information Technologies and Communications, about Azerbaijan for the Russarminfo news agency, Trend reports citing the Azerbaijani parliament.

The letter says that against the background of the dynamic development of cooperation between the two countries and parliaments, as well as the active mediation efforts of the Russian Federation in the normalization of Azerbaijani-Armenian relations, Oleg Matveychev, Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Information Policy, Information Technologies and Communications of the State Duma, on the air of the Russian-Armenian made statements to the Rusarminfo news agency, which were met with great concern in Azerbaijan.

Oleg Matveychev's accusations against Azerbaijan and Turkey, and his statements about the "ignition of the conflict by Azerbaijan" cause deep regret and are completely unacceptable. It is especially regrettable that such an "opinion" is expressed by the deputy chairman of the committee, which is responsible for information policy in the State Duma.

The letter notes that, as an official engaged in information activities, O. Matveychev should have had a clearer idea of the situation in the region, and should also have understood that such statements cast a shadow on the mediation activities of the Russian Federation. The Chairman of the Milli Majlis recalls that during the last meeting with Viacheslav Volodin, they discussed in detail the situation in the region and exchanged views on Azerbaijan's efforts to establish long-term peace, stability and security in the region, as well as on Armenia's violation of the provisions of the tripartite statement of November 10, 2020.

In a letter, the Speaker of the Milli Majlis said that, as a deputy representing the ruling United Russia party in the State Duma, O. Matveychev should adhere to the official position of deepening relations between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Azerbaijan on the basis of mutual cooperation, mutual respect for independence, state sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The letter expresses the need to evaluate the above-mentioned statement of the deputy of the State Duma. Gafarova expressed hope that in the future actions that contradict the spirit of relations between our countries and parliaments will be prevented by joint efforts.
