7th meeting of Intergovernmental Commission on bilateral co-op held between Azerbaijan, Lithuania (PHOTO)

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 8. The 7th meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission (IGC) on bilateral cooperation between the Government of Azerbaijan and the Government of Lithuania was held in Lithuania on May 8, 2023, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan told Trend.

Speaking at the meeting with an introductory speech, the co-chairman of the commission from Azerbaijan, Foreign Minister Bayramov highlighted the existence of a partnership between the two countries based on mutual interests, fundamental norms and principles of international law.

It was said that visits between the two countries at the highest and highest levels, regular contacts contribute to the development of relations.

Bayramov spoke about the efforts carried out by Azerbaijan in the post-Karabakh conflict period to rehabilitate and restore the territories affected by Armenian occupation, as well as to return people to their homes. Lithuanian companies and investors were invited to participate in projects in the territories of Azerbaijan liberated from occupation.

During the speech, it was also stressed that the massive contamination of the conflict-affected territories by mines is the main obstacle to the restoration and reconstruction work, as well as to ensure the safe return of internally displaced persons to their homes, the hope was expressed for cooperation with the Lithuanian side in the fight against the mine threat.

The minister informed about the availability of broad opportunities for mutually beneficial partnership in various other areas, including trade and investment, energy security and energy transition, communications and information technology, agribusiness, exchange in the educational and cultural spheres.

Moreover, the sides expressed confidence that the transport hub and the Zangazur corridor being created in the territories of Azerbaijan liberated from Armenian occupation will contribute to regional peace and stability and give impetus to intra-regional trade.

In his speech, the minister, speaking about the energy dialogue of Azerbaijan country with the EU, noted that green electricity is an important part of the country's energy dialogue with the EU and spoke about the projects being implemented in this direction and added that Azerbaijan has ample opportunities for cooperation with Lithuanian companies on projects of transition to renewable energy sources.

In his closing speech at the end of the meeting, Bayramov underlined the importance of the intergovernmental commission meeting as a mechanism for regular institutional dialogue to promote the road-map for the two countries and expressed confidence that the countries will continue dialogue and contacts in this direction.

During the meeting of the commission, officials of the relevant structures of Azerbaijan and Lithuania spoke, interdepartmental bilateral meetings were held, and at the end of the event, the protocol of the 7th meeting of the commission was signed.
