BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 30. French Polynesia has the right to independence, Executive Director of the Baku Initiative Group Abbas Abbasov said, Trend reports.
He made the announcement during the conference in the Azerbaijani Parliament on the theme "French Polynesia's right to decolonization - challenges and prospects".
According to him, eight international conferences have been held since the establishment of the Baku Initiative Group, the main goal of which is to highlight the problems of countries affected by colonization.
“Since 2013 until now, the UN General Assembly has been adopting resolutions aimed at gaining independence for this country, but so far to no avail. We believe that French Polynesia will gain its independence,” Abbasov said.
He also noted that Azerbaijan's position in international organizations and chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement is the biggest contribution to the fight against colonization.
Abbasov emphasized that a memorandum was signed between the Baku Initiative Group and Tavini Huiraatira, the ruling party of French Polynesia, at the last Vienna conference.
“This memorandum is a document that includes cooperation between the two organizations not only in the political sphere but also in the fields of health and education. I am sure that we will continue to cooperate with the Tavini Huiraatira Party in the future.” Every year, the UN holds decolonization events, which France constantly boycotts,” he added.
