BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 24. The four villages of Gazakh district, which came under Azerbaijani control, are quite heavily contaminated with mines, the chairperson of the Board of the Azerbaijan Republic Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) Vugar Suleymanov told Trend.
The chairman noted that demining works are currently underway in these villages.
“Unfortunately, there is quite a high level of contamination in these territories. Mainly anti-personnel mines are found. The number of mines in Gazakh is quite high; the statistics change daily,” Suleymanov emphasized.
Between 2020 and 2024, a total of 379 individuals became victims of landmines in Eastern Zangezur and Karabakh. Among them, 70 lost their lives, while 309 sustained various injuries. To date, demining operations have covered an area of 161,000 hectares in Eastern Zangezur and Karabakh, with 157,000 landmines and unexploded ordnance successfully cleared.
