BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 31. Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament Sahiba Gafarova met with Milan Sedláček, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Azerbaijan, on October 31, Trend reports.
During the meeting, the two officials discussed the political, economic, and humanitarian aspects of bilateral cooperation, emphasizing the importance of mutual visits, including contacts at the level of parliamentary chairs and friendship groups.
Gafarova highlighted the significant role of inter-parliamentary relations in enhancing state-to-state ties and noted that during the 6th convocation of the Azerbaijani Parliament, special attention was given to expanding cooperation with the Czech Parliament.
She expressed confidence that this collaboration would continue in the VII convocation and stressed the importance of enhancing cooperation among parliamentary friendship groups and relevant committees. Regarding joint activities and mutual support among deputies in international organizations, the Speaker underscored the need for developing mutual awareness to facilitate the exchange of objective information in inter-parliamentary relations.
In discussing preparations for COP29—the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, which will be held in Azerbaijan in November—Gafarova emphasized that COP29 addresses a global issue requiring solidarity, and any attempts to politicize the event are unacceptable.
Gafarova also mentioned the Azerbaijani Parliament's efforts to ensure a parliamentary contribution to discussions on global challenges such as climate change, stating that it plans to hold a meeting with the Inter-Parliamentary Union to create an opportunity for parliamentarians participating in COP29 to exchange views and present a unified stance in the fight against climate change.
Expressing gratitude for the warm reception, Ambassador Milan Sedláček congratulated Speaker Gafarova on her re-election and wished her success in her future activities. The ambassador expressed satisfaction with the cooperation between the two countries across various sectors, including legislative bodies, and expressed confidence that these ties would continue. He also congratulated Azerbaijan on hosting COP29, noting that the Czech Republic would be represented at a high level, which would contribute significantly to strengthening global cooperation on climate change.
The meeting also included an exchange of views on other matters of mutual interest.
